Mask Reflections

To summarize...

This only required a little bit of research. The following was found on two websites (with thanks to google)

- Paper Mache mixture: 1 part flour + 2 parts water

- Use a polyurethane varnish to solidify the mask (I found one with a glossy finish)

What took the most time for me was putting the strips of newspaper on my face. I had to re-do this because a couple times because I kept getting the mixture in my eyes. Next time I do this, I'll make sure I have someone help me. If you actually notice on the mask, there are tons of creases in and around the nose and brow... if someone else had been placing the strips for me, they probably could've made it smoother than I did.

I had recently watched The Dark Knight and noticed something in Batman's mask. Christian Bale's skin had been painted black around his eyes, making the illusion that his mask reached right up to his eyeballs. I used my mother's eyeliner to replicate this effect.

I consulted a Rona employee about double sided tape and putting it on your skin. He said that there's always a risk of skin reaction to tape... so unless I wanted to go to a professional makeup artist, I should test out the tape on my arm for pain and reactivity. Fortunately it did nothing to my skin... so I went ahead and used it on my face!

This mask was way more comfortable than anything I had worn on Halloween before. It contoured my face perfectly and because of the double sided tape, there was no strap around the back of my head!!!

I actually didn't think I'd be able to make the mask as well I did. I'm really proud of what I accomplished and will probably continue making more "custom" things.

The pumpkin in the picture was carved during IDEA class.
